Microwave sparks when heating metal containers, am I ruining it?

Rachel Taylor · · 3 replies

I heat up leftovers in metal containers occasionally (with lids off) in my microwave, and sometimes I see small sparks. I’m in Winnipeg and unsure if this is super bad for my Samsung microwave or just normal near metal edges. Should I stop immediately?

Definitely stop. Microwaving metal causes sparks and can damage the magnetron. Use microwave-safe glass or ceramic instead.

Spark happens because microwaves reflect off metal. It’s a fire hazard too.

If you want fast heating, transfer food to a microwave-safe plate or bowl.
