Basement ceiling height issues for finishing in Edmonton

My Edmonton basement ceiling is only 7 feet high. I want to finish it but worried about making it feel cramped. Any ideas on design tricks or materials that help with low ceilings? I was thinking of paint colors or lighting but open to suggestions.
