Humidifier mold concerns during humid Vancouver winter?

Sam Thompson · · 3 replies

I run a humidifier at night during our damp Vancouver winters, but I’ve heard that evaporative humidifiers can promote mold inside if not cleaned properly. Any tips on how often I should clean it and best practices to avoid mold buildup? I use tap water from the city. Also, anyone tried using distilled water here?

Clean mine every 3 days with vinegar solution. Distilled water helps reduce mineral buildup, which can feed mold.

I found that emptying the tank daily and drying it out prevents mold pretty well.

Have you considered a humidifier with antimicrobial features? A bit pricier but worth it for peace of mind.
