Do You Really Need to Replace Tires After Five Years?

There's a lot of talk about how tires should be replaced every five years, regardless of tread wear. I've always been curious about why that is. Are we just being overly cautious, or is there some scientific reasoning behind it? I understand that rubber degrades over time, but if the tires look good and have plenty of tread left, is it really necessary to swap them out?
And what about the hidden costs involved? If you’re not driving much or the wear looks fine, tossing perfectly usable tires seems wasteful—financially and environmentally. I mean, how many of us can just throw down money every five years on new tires when the old ones seem perfectly functional?
It makes me wonder if dealerships and manufacturers push this narrative just to boost their sales. Have any of you ever held onto tires longer and faced issues? Or do you play it safe with that five-year rule? What’s your take on balancing safety with saving a few bucks?
