Check Engine Light After Winter Salt Exposure - 2018 Mazda CX-5

Ethan Smith · · 3 replies

Hi all, after a few months of daily winter driving in Montreal with lots of road salt, my check engine light just came on. Car feels fine, no major performance changes. Anyone experienced this? I’m worried it’s some corrosion or sensor issue. Should I get a diagnostic scan ASAP or wait a bit?

Get a scan ASAP. Salt causes sensor connectors to corrode, triggering CEL.

Might be a loose gas cap too—happened to me in Ottawa after winter, just tightened it.

If you have a code reader, you can try scanning yourself before going to the shop.
