Snow removal: electric vs gas snow blower for Calgary winters?

Ethan Smith · · 3 replies

Trying to decide between buying a gas or electric snow blower for my driveway in Calgary. The winters get heavy snowfall and temps can dip below -20°C. I want something reliable but also low maintenance. Gas models look heavy and loud, but electric ones seem less powerful. Any experience with brands and cold weather performance?

I have a Toro electric and it struggles when snow is wet or packed. Calgary’s cold can sap battery life fast.

Gas is louder and needs maintenance, but it tackles deep snow much better. Maybe get a gas and keep an electric as backup?

Try to find a snow blower with a heated handle option—it’s a lifesaver in harsh cold!
