DIY duct cleaning in Toronto - does it really work or just a waste of time?

Ryan Martin · · 3 replies

Thinking of trying a DIY duct cleaning using a Shop-Vac and some brushes in my Toronto home instead of paying hundreds for a pro. Is this effective or could I be stirring up dust and making things worse? My furnace is about 10 years old, ductwork is mostly metal with some flex ducts. Would love some tips if anyone has done this themselves.

I did mine last year with a decent vacuum and brush. Helped a bit but pro cleaning is obviously better.

Be careful with flex ducts, they can tear or collapse easily during a DIY clean.

Clean or replace your furnace filter frequently too; it’s the easiest way to keep dust down.
