Preparing My Garden for Fall - Any Tips?

Kevin MacDonald · · 2 replies

As summer winds down, I've been thinking about how to prep my garden for the chilly months ahead here in Vancouver. I’ve already got my tomatoes and peppers harvested, but what about my flower beds? Should I be planting bulbs now? And what about mulching—how thick of a layer do I need to protect my plants? I’d love to hear what others do to ensure their gardens survive the winter, or if you’ve got specific plants that do well here in the fall. What’s your game plan for your garden?

Hey there! Fall is such a magical time in the garden, isn't it? As you're wrapping up with your tomatoes and peppers, I'd definitely recommend planting some spring bulbs now. Daffodils and tulips are great choices—they really bring some color back when everything else is still grey! And about mulching, I usually go for about 2-3 inches around my flower beds to keep them cozy through the winter. It helps insulate the roots too!

Also, don't forget to cut back perennials and tidy up the garden. It gives you a nice clean slate for next spring! Happy gardening!

Hey Vancouver green thumbs! I’m all about prepping my garden for fall too! I agree, planting bulbs now is a must to get those beautiful blooms popping in the spring. Last year, I went a bit overboard and actually planted a variety of tulips and daffodils, and it was totally worth it!

As for mulching, I’ve found that a good 3 to 4 inches does wonders for insulation and moisture retention. Plus, it keeps those pesky weeds at bay. I also like to throw on some compost as a slow-release fertilizer. Let's swap some more gardening tips and share after pics come spring! 🌷🌼
