AC compressor outside freezing up during hot Toronto summer?

My central AC compressor in Toronto has been freezing up lately even though it’s over 30°C outside. The coils get covered in frost and the system shuts down. I replaced the filter and cleaned the coils last month. Could this be a refrigerant issue or something wrong with the fan? Should I shut it down until a pro comes? Anyone had this before?

Freezing is usually low refrigerant or poor airflow. Since you cleaned coils and filter, check if outdoor fan is working properly.

If the fan motor is failing, the coils won’t get warm and will freeze. Definitely have a pro check refrigerant levels.

Shutting it off is good to avoid damage until someone inspects it.
