Help! My furnace makes banging noises before firing up

Tyler Brown · · 3 replies

Living in Winnipeg and my furnace has started making loud banging noises right before it kicks on. It’s a gas furnace about 8 years old. Seems like delayed ignition maybe? I’m worried it might be unsafe. Should I call a tech or is this something I can troubleshoot myself?

Banging is usually delayed ignition, call a pro ASAP since it can lead to carbon monoxide leaks.

Check your furnace filter and clean if dirty, sometimes airflow issues cause ignition delays.

Try turning the thermostat down and back up; if noise persists, better to get an HVAC technician.
