Help selecting kitchen cabinet finish that holds up in humid Winnipeg summers

Sophia Fraser · · 3 replies

Hi everyone, I’m remodeling my kitchen cabinets in Winnipeg and worried about humidity affecting the finish. Should I choose solid wood with polyurethane or laminate? Pros and cons? I love the look of painted shaker-style but if it chips or bubbles in humidity, that’s a problem. Anyone with experience in Manitoba climate doing cabinet refinishing or replacements?

I’d recommend laminate or thermofoil for humid areas. Solid wood can swell or warp if not properly sealed.

Painted cabinets can last but use high-quality paint and a good sealant. I had good results with Benjamin Moore’s Advance line.

Consider adding a humidity-controlled vent fan to help with moisture control too.
