Best way to soundproof a basement ceiling under $1000?

Hey all, I’m finishing my basement in Ottawa and the loud footsteps from upstairs drive me nuts. I want to soundproof the ceiling but need to keep it under $1000 CAD. Has anyone tried using resilient channels or some cheap insulation options? I’m planning a media room, so it doesn’t have to be perfect but decent enough to enjoy movies. Thanks!

I used roxul safe n sound insulation with resilient channels and it made a huge difference for about $800. Definitely worth it for the peace and quiet!

Did you consider adding a drop ceiling with acoustic tiles? It’s cheaper and easy for access, but might lower the ceiling height.

How thick is your ceiling joist spacing? Closer spacing lets you add more insulation for better noise dampening.
