Trading in my 2012 Ford Escape for a newer model – dealer offer too low?

I want to trade in my 2012 Ford Escape with 140,000 km at a local Calgary dealer. They offered me $4,500 CAD on a 2021 Escape listed for $28,000. I feel it’s low. Should I try to sell it privately first or negotiate harder? Any tips on maximizing trade-in value?

Private sale usually gets you more cash if you can wait. They took mine for about $1,000 less than listing price on Kijiji last year.

Try to clean the car inside out and get any small repairs done first. Dealers always use minor defects to lower the offer.

Did you get multiple trade-in quotes? Sometimes dealers will compete if you mention another offer.
