Winter battery performance—should I get a special cold-weather battery in Edmonton?

Tyler Grant · · 3 replies

My battery sometimes struggles on cold mornings in Edmonton, especially below -20C. Thinking of upgrading to a battery rated for harsh winters. Does anyone have recommendations or brands that perform best in cold Canadian winters?

Look for batteries with high CCA (cold cranking amps). Optima and NAPA batteries tend to do well in cold weather here.

I switched to an AGM battery last year, and it starts up the truck no problem even at -30C.

Make sure your alternator is charging properly too; sometimes that’s the root of battery issues.
